This weekend I got back into my “Austen Mood”. I’m sort of a movie addict, but which movie I want to watch always depends on the mood I’m in.
This time I wanted something new, something I hadn’t seen yet. After hours of researching (I’m not exagerating) I found this movie called “Austenland”. At first I thought yay! But then I started to fear that I wasn’t going to like it because it’s about Austen and her world, but is set in 2014. You must not expect a period drama of any kind. It’s really more of a romantic comedy, with emphasis on the comedy part. I started watching it anyway, and I liked it very much indeed!
Austenland is based on a novel by Shannon Hale. It’s about an American woman, Jane Hayes, who is obsessed with all things Austen. Especially Mr. Darcy. After another failed relationship she decides to spend her savings on a trip to Austenland, a Jane Austen themed resort in England, in the hope of finding her one true love. The guests there have their own imaginary names and dress and behave like proper ladies and gentlemen of the regency era (sometimes unsuccesfully).
I’m not going to dig deeper into the plot, as it might not interest everyone. I found the story quite good, and Jennifer Coolidge cracked me up every time. I thought the movie sometimes went over the top, but I couldn’t help but love it in the end…
Here’s the trailer if you’d like to see more of it:
